Halloween Mantle Mood Board

Over at Young House Love, Sherry and John make what they call Mood Boards.  It's where they take all the stuff they'd like to add to a room or area, or just a collection of stuff they like, and put all the items on a white background in Photoshop.

I'm still on my Halloween kick, and I've started looking at different mantle-scapes and what I could decorate my own little makeshift mantle with.  So, I made my own little mood board.

1. Halloween Monsters Garland, from here.
2. Pumpkins sitting on candle holders, from here.
3. Eat, Drink and Be Scary print from here.
4. White vases with wispy tree limbs in them, from here.
5. Candy Corn Garland, from here.
6. Candy Corn Vases with Candles, from here.

Just a starting point.  I'm sure I'll make a few more mood boards before Halloween gets here. :)

Halloween: Are We There Yet?

Man, I just can't help myself.  Today is August 29, and that means we are just over two months away from Halloween.  I don't know why, but I am super-excited for Halloween this year.  In honor of that, I've compiled a list of movies to watch during the month of October.  I didn't know I had enough "scary" movies to completely fill up October, I thought I was going to have to resort to Netflix to take up the last few days, if not weeks.  But I did!  Here's my list (and just so you know, this is every "scary" movie I own, so it was just meant to be!):

1. Hocus Pocus (my favorite one)
2. Nightmare on Elm Street
3. NES 2
4. NES 3
5. NES 4
6. NES 5
7. NES 6
8. NES 7
9. NES 8
10. Prom Night
11. Saw
12. Saw II
13. Disturbia
14. The Orphanage
15. Cry_Wolf
16. Urban Legends
17. UL2: Final Cut
18. UL3: Bloody Mary
19. Hard Candy
20. When A Stranger Calls
21. Silence of the Lambs
22. Hannibal
23. The Number 23
24. Secret Window
25. Scream
26. Scream 2
27. Scream 3
28. Scream 4
29. Rocky Horror Picture Show
30. Shutter Island
31. Nightmare Before Christmas

Pretty exciting list!  I kind of want to watch one right now, but I'm not going to spoil it for myself, as I haven't seen any of these in a long time (y'know, since last Halloween ;).  I've also decided that we are going to have a little Halloween celebration at the apartment this year.  I'm going to make all these Halloween-themed treats and maybe even some stew or something.  I'm excited about it.  I'll write about it again as we get closer to All Hallows Eve.  Ooh, can't wait!

Pumped-Up Kicks

I went running for the first time this morning in several days.  According to RunKeeper, my last run was August 10!!  There was a big reason for this, and trust me - it wasn't laziness.

I hurt my stupid legs almost two weeks ago.  As you may know, I've been training for Color Me Rad, which is coming to Raleigh in October.  I still had a long road to go down if I wanted to run at all in the race.  Man, was I in some pain!  I don't remember how it started, or specifically when, all I remember is feeling this hollow pain in the side of my left knee; this long pain like taffy being stretched.  I remember breathing sharply because the pain in my legs was so bad trying to walk Bonnie down the stairs that I almost couldn't breathe at all.  The night before, I was fine.  I woke up the next morning, and thought everything was situation-normal until I started walking down the stairs.  After I had lived with ice packs on both knees for almost a week and worried Justin and Mother half to death, I looked to the Internet for answers.

Upon starting my research, I thought I had Runner's Knee.  This made sense.  Maybe I had been running more/farther or pushing myself too hard and now it was catching up with me.  But after a little more time scouring the 'net, I found out I matched every symptom for Iliotibial Band Syndrome, or IBS.  I found out that Runner's Knee usually affects the knee cap.  People who have Runner's Knee can barely breathe on their knee cap without it hurting.  I had no pain whatsoever there.  IBS on the other hand, affects the side of the knee, where the ligament is.  And that, my friends, is where this immense pain was radiating from.  As far as I can tell (since I never went to a doctor), I pulled the ligament in my leg that runs down my thigh and is attached to my tibia (front leg bone).  After I knew all of this, I was then able to find out what caused the pain in the first place.  My shoes!

Yes, apparently, after a long time, your running shoes are not meant for running anymore.  I was not aware of this.  I was under the impression that the more broke-in your shoes were, the better.  It's almost the complete opposite, as I've discovered.  I was still wearing these little white Sketchers that we bought my freshman year of high school to try out for the dance team!  Yeah, those shoes were 11 years old.  And they were slowly but surely killing my ligaments.  I just couldn't believe that shoes could cause that kind of pain in my legs.  And having to walk up and down stairs (one of the biggies for what not to do while healing) was necessary everyday of my life.  I was coming out even at 0.  I wasn't getting any better and I wasn't doing anything to make it any worse.  Justin had pretty much forbade me from doing anything exercise-related out of fear of me making it worse.  I was icing my legs in between rubbing Aspercreme on them.  For nearly two weeks, I was pretty miserable.

Then, on the weekend of the 18th, Justin and I went home to visit our families.  My mom was super insistent on buying me a new pair of running shoes.  After seeing the price tag (my new kicks were a whopping $113!  I've never spent that much on shoes in my life!), I told her it was just too much money, but we did walk out of the store with them.  The day we bought them, I wore them out of the store.  I wore them that entire day until I went to bed.  And when I woke up the next morning, there was no pain.  None.  It was like it had never happened.  I couldn't believe it!  After a diet of Aleve and tears for two weeks, the pain just disappeared!  It was a miracle.

So, here they are: Asics women's running shoes, model #GT-2170, in Storm / Electric Violet / Lightning, size 8.5.  You can go here if you'd like to read about all the cool features of these shoes.

I went running this morning and got to feel the sweet, sore burning of my lungs for the first time in a little over two weeks.  It was fabulous.  So, if you're feeling any of the symptoms of IBS, go buy some new shoes!!  They will change your life (as any shoe-loving woman will tell you).

Needs More Splenda.

Guess what?

I was contacted by someone else about a job!

Yes, you read that right.  I posted my resume on Indeed.com and actually received a reply!  I received the email above last Friday, sent her my resume and writing samples yesterday, and an hour after she received those from me, we had a phone interview!  It all went crazy fast.  I was afraid at first that it wasn't legit, but after yesterday it seems like it is.  It would be a full-time position, working at least 40 hours a week (she said that sometimes it would be more than 40 if that's what it took to "get the job done"), and it would basically be the same work I'm doing now.  The person who was in the position before me set everything up, and now I have to maintain all of it.  Click here to read more about the company.

I'm supposed to hear back from them sometime this week.  I'll let you know when I find out something!

As an aside, I really should have put more Splenda in my coffee this morning...

On the Hunt

Over the last week, I've been looking into getting another job.  Even though I'm happy with my current job (to a degree), and I'm thankful for the one(s) I have, I would still like a better one.

This is hard for me to admit, because my mom and Justin, specifically, both think I can do anything.  This is awesome for my ego, but not for applying for a job.  My mom (and Justin, sometimes) talks me up to everyone and sometimes I feel very pressured by this.  My mom, like many other moms, thinks that because I can make blogs/websites and can make videos using iMovie on the computer that I am a computer whiz.  Then when she has a question about the inner-workings of her computer or the Internet, delving into stuff like C++, she doesn't understand why I don't automatically know the answer.  The mediums I work with and the mediums my mother thinks I am the master of are so radically different.  To her, it's all just "computer."  It's almost like thinking that a child who has mastered Checkers should somehow automatically know how to play Chess because the board looks the same.  So, when a potential employer asks my mom if I know how to do "blank," if it has to do with computers in any way, my mom starts singing my praises.  Then when they get to me and I either have no clue what aspect of computers they're talking about, or have zero experience in that part of the field, I am left in the dust.  Justin does the same thing.

This is not to say I am not grateful for their efforts.  The fact that the two most important people in my life think I am capable of pretty much anything is both flattering and humbling.  Sadly, it's also wrong. :)

I said all that to say this: because I am so often put up against jobs I am in no way suited for, I tend to have a low view of myself in terms of what I can do.  I always see what I can't do and that can end up weighing heavily on me.  I look through countless job postings on numerous websites and all I ever see is what I can't do or what I'm not capable of.

Well, I'm sick of that.

So this morning, I went to LinkedIn (ironically, to get a better idea of my current job description) and searched.  I found a Copywriter job with a company called Capstrat in Raleigh.  Capstrat is "One of the largest communications firms in the Southeast and one of the top 40 agencies in the United States.  Capstrat is a full-service strategic communications firm, providing these services in-house:"

Taken directly from the website.

Their About page is one of the funniest/coolest ones I've ever seen.  They just seem like a cool company and I'd love to work for them.  I applied to the Copywriter position and am hoping for the best.  The company is also in Raleigh, but it's only about 25 minutes from the apartment, as opposed to 40!

This is all exciting for me because I finally feel like I am deserving of something job-related.  Usually, I am so quick to just say, "They'd never hire me," and don't even try.  But this morning I just felt different.  I felt deserving and I felt cool.  I didn't care what the job description said (even though I could do this job pretty easily...it is pretty much what I went to school for), I just wanted to try.  So, I did.  Here's hoping it paid off!

Some Pinterest Updates

I realized that I haven't been sharing a lot of my adventures with Pinterest lately.  I've made 4 recipes I found on Pinterest (really 5, but one was just terrible, so I'm not going to share it).  All original sources are linked to either the pictures or their captions.

  • Wendy's Frosty Knockoff

    • I made this, because I absolutely love Frostys.  A small Frosty has 300 calories, and this knockoff claimed to only have 80.  It has a bunch of good stuff in it - pudding mix, milk, cocoa, vanilla, and Splenda.
    • After mixing it up in a blender, I had my first sip and was really darn smitten.  It tastes nothing like a Frosty.  But it does taste like a pudding milkshake, and it was delectable.  I'd recommend this; it's fast and sweet and good!

  • Miracle Mac N' Cheese

    • This recipe claimed to be extremely easy and quick, and made with homemade ingredients.  It was all of these things.
    • I made this last night, and I thought it turned out rather well.  Justin wasn't a huge fan (he likes traditional-Southern baked MnC the best), but he said it was okay.  It was very fast and easy to make.  I would recommend this as well if you're dealing with someone less picky than my husband!

  • Slow Cooker Cheesy Chicken Quesadillas

    • I made these originally to get some use out of the quesadilla maker Justin and I got for our wedding.  They turned out quite well.  I'd like to add more spice/seasoning to the chicken mixture, but I'm not sure what I want to add to it.
    • The recipe claims the chicken mixture to be very soupy, the original cook having to use a slotted spoon to remedy that problem.  Mine has never been soupy, and has always been nice and thick.  Not sure what I'm doing differently.  They are good, and super easy if you have a quesadilla maker.

  • M&M Cookie Pie

    • This thing.  Oh, my.  Not only is it incredibly easy to make, but it is scrumptious!  You basically make M&M cookie dough and plop it into a dish/pan instead of onto a cookie sheet to make a cookie pie.
    • Every time I make this, it's a big hit.  Justin loves it (!).  I'd definitely recommend this.

So there you have it.  A small update on how I'm actually trying to accomplish what I'm pinning!  I hope all you other pinners are enjoying seeing your pins come to life, too!

Daily Creed

Daily Creed, by John Grey

I love this.  I keep this in a frame on my desk at work.  I think it's lovely, and something we should all try to live by; religion and personal afflictions notwithstanding.  Just a little bright spot on a Tuesday morning!

Book Review: The Postcard Killers

The Postcard Killers, by James Patterson & Liza Marklund

The Postcard Killers is a story about a couple, Mac and Sylvia Rudolph, who go on a killing spree through Europe, targeting young couples that are often on their honeymoon.  Jacob Kanon, an American police officer from New York, is in Europe trying to track down the couple because he suspects them of killing his daughter, Kimmy, while she was vacationing in Europe with her fiancĂ©.  As is their pattern, the killers send a postcard to a newspaper reporter that is local in the town the most recent killing took place.  After local news reporter Dessie gets one of their infamous postcards, Jacob teams up with her to solve the case and catch the killers.

Warning: Spoilers follow here.

After Jacob and Dessie team up, they put together a lot of information in a short amount of time.  They find out that the killers are representing art whenever they kill their victims.  The killers lay the victims out in weird positions after they are dead.  These positions are depicting actual famous paintings.  Upon further investigation back in the states, Jacob learns the couple are actually twins and not lovers (both, actually), and they both attended UCLA as art students.  They were expelled for having intercourse in public as a form of art.  Afterwards, they began their killing spree in Europe to "justify" their perception of art.  This is all happening while the twins have come forward to clear their name and are being held temporarily in prison.  Jacob and Dessie are now in a race to convict the twins before the escape for good under false innocence.  While the twins are in jail, another postcard comes to another reporter.  This only aids the twins in clearing their name, as they couldn't have done it while in jail themselves.  Jacob and Dessie eventually find out that there are several Postcard Killers and not just the twins acting alone as originally thought.  The Killers all communicate through a website the twins set up while in college, where they celebrate and showcase their killings in the name of art.  Once the site is found, the IP addresses are tracked and the additional killers are all found and convicted.  Because Swedish police found the twins innocent after the mysterious postcard popped up, they are now trying to escape before anyone gets wise again.  Dessie calls in a favor to a criminal cousin of hers and a watch is set up for the twins at the border to Russia.  They find the twins and a chase ensues.  Jacob finally gets his revenge by killing Sylvia, the killer of the two twins with Mac being her lacky, and getting a knife in his lung courtesy of Mac.  Dessie shots Mac and the killers have finally been brought to justice.  In the epilogue, Dessie is finishing her doctorate and she and Jacob have moved back to New York together, now a couple.

This book had so much potential.  You look in the jacket.  It tells you this is James Patterson's most enthralling thriller yet and the premise is good, too.  This book didn't live up to that potential for me.  The book is in large print, which makes it easy to read, but the number of chapters drove me crazy.  The book has 140 chapters and 420 pages.  There's generally a new chapter every other page.  It helped to break up the book, but it was almost overkill in my opinion.  The cover claims the book to be "The scariest vacation thriller ever," and it really wasn't.  As a matter of fact, I didn't find the book scary at all.  I of course found it grisly, but not scary.  I didn't lie in bed at night afraid of the Postcard Killers.  The last hundred pages or so are the best part of the book.  As everything is coming together and Dessie and Jacob are exploring their relationship, the book gains some character.  Until then, I found it to be pretty dead.  It had a good ending and epilogue, but not a very strong middle.  I give it a 3/5.

For Next Time
The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger

"The Time Traveler's Wife is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's marriage and their passionate love for each other as the story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals--steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable."

Like a High School Loner...

I finally have a date!

I finally know when Color Me Rad Raleigh is.  It will be Saturday, October 27 at 9 a.m.  Now I can tell people the day instead of just the month!  This is exciting, indeed.

Last night, I ran around my parking lot THREE times!  As in, I made a complete circle around my parking lot three times.  Not consecutively, but still!  This is a big deal.

Here's what's not a big deal...my "before" picture.  I want to track progress and the only way do that is in pictures so I can see for myself.  Ugh, I hate this.  Without further ado, me:

Day 1: July 29, 2012.

I know.  Seriously, what business do I have taking these kinds of pictures.  But, this is me.  I look a little more rough than usual here because I had just finished exercising and was beat.  I only remembered to take a picture of myself as I was getting ready to hop in the shower.

Maybe this is just more motivation to do something.  To get out and run!  I found the coolest bible verse yesterday that I'm going to write on my running shirt.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2 Tim. 4:7

Those are exactly the three things I want out of this 5K.  To do my best, to finish, and to have faith that God will help me!

Here I come, October! :)

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Oh, what a day.

Today is apparently "one of those days."  I have been going since the sun came up (for real!) and am just about beat.  It's not even 2 p.m. yet!

There are three major things that are making today "one of those days."
  1. When I got up this morning, I had an email from my boss telling me to stay home today and now I'm fearful for my job security.
  2. As Justin and I got to the car to take him to work, the low pressure light came on.  Sure enough, we had a very low tire.
  3. I may have inadvertently ruined a pair of Justin's pants.
And now, I will elaborate.

Over the last week, my boss has been hovering a bit.  He keeps sending me emails, asking for specific jobs I'm working on or have been working on.  It's all very basic procedure, he's just keeping tabs, but it's also quite abrupt.  Then this morning, I get an email from him giving me the day off.  As much as I appreciate this, my mind is racing.  Am I slowly being fired?  I feel like he did a two-step of "What am I paying you for?" and "I don't need to spend money on that."  In this morning's email, he wrote that he was taking today to look over his budgeting and that some of the marketing budget may be cut.  I'm not sure what that means.  Does that mean I'm getting my hours cut?  Because that's no good, either.  Ugh.

The tire turned out fine.  I was able to drive the car to the dealership, and they were able to plug it, attributing the leak to a small nail.  So for now, we're good on that end.

I was fixing pair A of Justin's pants with some Heat N' Bond to secure a loose hem.  Once pair A was good to go, I picked up pair B, just to iron the hem.  The tag on pair B said Low Heat.  I didn't read this tag.  I only had to put the iron on there for a few seconds, because after that an imprint of the entire iron was left.  I freaked out and threw it in the washing machine in cold water.  I found a site online that listed white vinegar as a solution to removing iron stains and am currently testing this out.

I'll give an update on any of this when I know something.

Toodles.

Update #1 at 2:46 p.m.

I tried the vinegar treatment and promptly washed the pants.  The stain was much less noticeable.  I worked the vinegar treatment again and put it outside to dry.  Here's hoping.

Update #2 at 12:37 p.m. the next day

Well, as usual, things are fine.  I told Justin about his pants last night and after looking at them, he said they were fine and not to worry about it.  (Not worry?  Has he met me??)  Justin also made me feel a lot better about the job situation, which I've heard nothing more about.  So, not a very exciting update, but thankfully things are much better.  God's good that way. :)
